Fertilization

The bonding of a sperm cell with an egg cell is an important and central step. The Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection method (ICSI) is a milestone in the treatment of infertility.  This method involves injecting a single sperm cell into an egg cell with the aid of a thin injection needle.  This method allows men with severely diminished fertility to have children of their own.

In rare cases, fertilization does not occur even with the use of the ICSI method.  In the meantime, ICSI is being further developed in order to help affected couples.  These methods are not used in all cases, however, as they are time consuming and require embryologists with considerable experience.
