Common causes of infertility in women

In case of the female partner, there are series of factors which can stand in the way of a pregnancy:

Tubal infertility

For one third of women unable to conceive the cause is the tubes: they could be partially or completely blocked, or so damaged that their function is impaired even though they are navigable. In the most cases, the tubes are affected by resilient inflammations. Even preceding tubal pregnancies, lesions after an operation or spontaneous excretion of the uterine lining (endometriosis) can be possible causes. Read more

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO)

Hormonal disorders

Individuals hormonal balance is very important for the ability to conceive. Hormonal malfunctions can lead to disorders in the ovum maturation, absence of ovulation, and to defective corpus luteum (yellow body) which in turn impairs nidation. Elevated male hormone (androgene) levels are often caused by ovary cysts. Extreme under or overweight, extreme oscillations in weight in a short period of time, extreme physical strains, thyroid dysfunctions, tumors (very rarely), medicines and stress can significantly disturb the hormonal balance.

Other reasons may include insufficiently formed ovarian follicle, elevated prolactine levels or early menopause.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is the growth of the uterine endometrium outside of the uterus. It is still unknown, why exactly this happens in some women. During menstruation, minute amounts of uterine endometrium probably travel through the tubes and reach the abdominal cavity, where they attach and can lead to lesions. These are manifested in strong pain during menstruation and often during intercourse. Read more

The ovarian reserves

The majority of women do not have information on how big is their personal probability to become pregnant. The decision to bring a child into the world is often postponed until the "time is right". By the time this moment of life finally arrives and all the requirements are met, fertility can be severely diminished or even non-existent. Read more

Malformations of the ovaries, tubes or the uterus

This is very uncommon (i.e. five out of 100 women). The malformations can differ in distinctiveness and are congenital, resulting from an abnormal formation of the respective organ. Read more

Antibodies against oocytes or sperms

In rare cases, the body cannot recognize its own oocytes. The immune system builds antibodies against them. This results in repeated miscarriages. More often, there are antibodies against the male sperms in the secretion of the cervix (neck of the uterus). The sperm is killed already on its way through the uterus and it cannot reach the tubes.
